• Play Therapy is the experience for children
where toys, games, puppets, puzzles and crafts are used as a means
to assist children in resolving conflict. A trained therapist considers
the age and developmental phase of the child and the specific conflict
or concern to determine which combination of play therapy techniques
is most effective. Children do not typically have the skills or
development to talk through a situation. They need “props”
to help them recognize and express what they are thinking and feeling.
The use of play therapy builds trust between the child and therapist,
facilitating a foundation that assists the child in becoming more
adept in talking about difficult topics.
A play therapy model is often used with children three-to-seven
years old. As the child matures, play therapy techniques are combined
with verbal techniques of conflict resolution, problem solving and
processing of feelings. For older children, adolescents and even
adults, expressive mediums like sand, art and clay remain valuable
considerations for techniques within the therapy experience.
